Signs Your AC Is Low on Refrigerant (And Why It Matters)

Thomas Abbey

If your AC is blowing warm air, you notice ice forming on the refrigerant line, your system is making a hissing or bubbling sound, or your energy bills have been climbing without explanation, low refrigerant may be the cause. Refrigerant loss is always the result of a leak — not normal use — and the only real fix is finding and repairing that leak. MTN Air of North Georgia diagnoses and repairs refrigerant issues for homeowners across north metro Atlanta, 7 days a week.

What Refrigerant Does and Why It Matters

Refrigerant is the substance your AC system uses to absorb heat from inside your home and release it outside. It cycles continuously through the system under pressure, shifting between liquid and vapor states to move the heat along. Without the right refrigerant charge, your system can't do its job. It may still run — and often does, sometimes for weeks — but it works harder for worse results. That shows up in your comfort and your utility bills before anything else does.

Why Refrigerant Levels Drop

This is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter at MTN Air: refrigerant does not get used up like gasoline. A properly sealed system runs on the same charge for the life of the equipment.

When refrigerant is low, something has created a path for it to escape. That might be a pinhole in a copper line, a failing valve, a corroded coil, or a joint that has worked loose over time. The leak is always the actual problem. Adding refrigerant without finding and fixing that leak is a temporary patch, not a repair.

The Signs Your System May Be Low

These are the symptoms homeowners in Alpharetta, Duluth, Johns Creek, and across north metro Atlanta most commonly describe when refrigerant is the issue:

  • Warm or barely cool air from the vents, even with the thermostat set low
  • Ice forming on the refrigerant line or the outdoor unit
  • A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor or outdoor equipment
  • Energy bills rising without any change in how you're using the system
  • Longer run cycles that never quite bring the house to temperature

The R-22 Problem

If your system was installed before 2010, there is a reasonable chance it uses R-22 refrigerant, also known as Freon. R-22 has been phased out under federal environmental regulations and is no longer manufactured in the United States. What remains in circulation is reclaimed stock, and prices have climbed significantly as supply has tightened.

For homeowners in Lawrenceville, Suwanee, and other north metro Atlanta communities still running older R-22 systems, a refrigerant leak often becomes a repair-versus-replace conversation. Topping off an R-22 system without fixing the underlying leak is expensive and temporary. The same problem will return.

Why a DIY Recharge Kit Is Not the Answer

Refrigerant recharge kits are sold at hardware stores, and the temptation to use one on a struggling system is understandable. The problem is that these kits add refrigerant without addressing the leak, and they rarely provide an accurate charge.

Overcharging a system is as damaging as undercharging. Beyond the mechanical risk, handling refrigerants without EPA 608 certification is a federal violation. The right path is a proper leak diagnosis from a licensed technician who can identify the source and correct it.

What a Proper Refrigerant Repair Actually Looks Like

A refrigerant diagnosis from MTN Air of North Georgia starts with verifying the charge and locating where the system is losing it. If a leak is found, we repair the source before adding any refrigerant.

On older systems, we'll also walk you through whether a repair is the practical path forward or whether the cost points toward AC replacement instead. We're not going to push you toward a new system if the repair is genuinely the better call. You'll get the honest picture and make the decision from there.
